Make an attempt to be conscious of what you are distracting yourself from. You will not always succeed in confronting your pain, nor should you. There is nothing inherently wrong with "taking your mind off things", just try to be aware of what these things are.
I find this to be vital. The overarching approach is to allow your humanity to be what it is. Yet at the same time, you can practice consciousness and gain a greater understanding of yourself. Live an examined life.
