I can assure you, this was not as easy as it looks. You can see it on his face, he does not want to be here, but that was the point. To do something together, to set an example. To bring her darkness to the light.
An image says more than a thousand words. But it also conceals context. A single photograph can create a reality that was true only for an instant. What came before, what will come after, is of no concern.
Let me paint you another picture. She woke up this morning feeling disoriented, lost within the mountain range of her bedsheets. Peaks and valleys rose and fell with every breath she took. This was a world where she was in control. It only took a swift movement of her feet to straighten the sheets, turning mountains into flatlands. What remained was the darkness that awaited underneath. This was his kingdom, for there was a beast beneath her cozy blanket.
He was there to protect her, to tell her about all the things she couldn’t do. To serve as a constant reminder of her faults and weaknesses. He commanded an extensive vocabulary, despite what you may believe based on his outer appearance. He always knew what to say to stop her dead in her tracks, presenting himself as the voice of reason. The constant whispering gave way to a rhythm that lured her into complacency. Now, hush, hush, stay here, and you will be safe. It really is that simple.
Whenever she closed her eyes and started dreaming about everything that could be, he pulled her back down into a space that felt almost too familiar. A realm cloaked in a soothing darkness. The only way to deal with the stalkers of her past was to face them head-on. Accepting him meant accepting all of her—the beauty, the beast, and everything in between.
As she looked up into his glowing amber eyes, she realized that it was never the darkness that frightened her, but the seductive allure of surrendering to it.
