In the following, I propose three overarching goals I pursue with my use of generative AI tools. These goals are closely linked to my guidelines for balancing AI and artistic vision, but stand on a higher level of reasoning as they inform both artistic and everyday decisions.
This is especially important because amidst this exhilarating landscape of constant innovation, it’s easy to be swept away by the allure of the next big thing. Cooperations are competing for your attention at an unprecedented scale. And while embracing innovation is essential, it’s equally important to be discerning, pausing to ask ourselves what we truly aim to accomplish by using this technology. This is the crucial question I’ve attempted to answer for myself.
- Holistic Self-Understanding: My goal is to use generative AI as a tool for multidimensional growth, enriching not just my skills but also my ethical and empathic understanding. I want to integrate AI in a way that complements my creativity and deepens my self-awareness. While it’s tempting to see AI as a tool for immediate skill enhancement, the ideal should be a holistic sense of growth that encompasses not just what you can do, but who you are.
- Intentional Individuality: With the power to reshape identity and simulate endless possibilities, my goal is to employ generative AI as a mirror rather than a mask. I want to harness the technology to solidify and express my individuality, making each choice in the vast sea of options a conscious, intentional act. In this environment of infinite potential, I want to fortify my individuality through careful and ethical decision-making. This is perhaps the greatest paradox. While more choices lead to a dilution of identity, each individual choice you make will also carry more weight than before.
- Consciousness Expansion: Rather than viewing generative AI as an oracle of answers, I want to engage with it as a catalyst for exploration. My goal is to establish a symbiotic relationship with the technology that enriches my understanding of the world. This involves a commitment to maintaining human agency and using generative AI as a tool for deeper understanding, rather than an answer-generating machine. Generative AI is not here to tell me how to think. It’s here to help me think better and understand as much about our reality as possible.
